Always Be on the Hunt
After recently attending a bunch of classes taught by industry professionals: a mix of investment bankers, ceos, and founders, I found that they all embodied one central philosophy. They're always open and looking around for new opportunities. In order to gain access to many of the finance careers in the world, you need to have the right experiences and be well-connected with the right network. One of the mentors, Greg Durgin emphasize having "screw it, why not" mentality. He got into Boston University on a full ride from the scholarship QuestBridge and is now working in NYC as a real estate private equity analyst. He had not even planned on going to college yet here he is now. What a change in fate huh? He preached over and over again about how you just have to try. Cold-calling, networking, all need effort put into it. Your goals aren't just going to fall into your lap, so just try everything you can.
In fact, one of the other speakers cold-called so much that he got temporarily banned form LinkedIn because they thought he was a bot. Nevertheless they managed to pull past that and get funding for their startup company. You never know what one encounter might be the turning point in your life, so go ahead- attend that conference, strike up that conversation and make your goals come true.
Even if you face rejection like how one of the teachers from Harvard got rejected from all 80 internships that he applied to over summer, he still moved past that and did good later on after learning to improver from his mistakes Admittedly, a huge blow to his ego, but a learning opportunity nonetheless. He switched up his resume, expanded his network, and eventually was able to get his current investment banking job. It's a steep hill we have to climb especially in this job market, but I'm confident yall can do it no matter what.
